What can a helper do in one hour?
An hour can be useful for a focused job. What fits depends on its size, the preparation needed and the helper’s experience. Choose a clear priority rather than a long list of things to rush through.
Start with one service and one priority
Tell the helper what matters most, then list any smaller tasks to do if time allows. These examples are starting points, not promises that every task will fit into an hour.
Help around the house
An hour might be spent tidying one room, washing up and wiping accessible kitchen surfaces, or sorting and folding a basket of laundry. The amount depends on the starting condition and the size of the job.
- Have cleaning products and equipment ready.
- Explain where things belong so tidying does not become a guessing game.
- Keep deep cleaning, heavy lifting and hazardous waste outside the booking.
A focused garden job
Watering pots, weeding a small accessible patch or sweeping a path can make a useful, manageable visit. Agree the area first and tell the helper where garden waste should go.
- Provide suitable tools and gloves.
- For mowing, supply a suitable working lawnmower and discuss the lawn size.
- Digging, hedge trimming, tree cutting and work at height are not included.
Preparing a simple meal
Choose a straightforward recipe and discuss portions, dietary requirements and allergies before the visit. Preparation and clearing up both take time, so agree a realistic plan with the helper.
- Have ingredients, utensils and cooking equipment available.
- Allow more time for several dishes or a larger batch.
- Cooking helpers must have their Level 2 food hygiene certificate verified by Hometown.
A small household repair
A simple shelf or a small assembly task may suit a handyman booking, depending on the wall, fixings and instructions. Describe the job clearly so the helper can check it is within their abilities.
- Provide the tools, fixings and materials.
- Allow time for preparation and checking the finished job.
- Plumbing, gas, electrical and structural work are not included.
How the minimum booking works
Each service is booked in whole hours, with a minimum of one hour. A task that takes 20 minutes still has a one hour charge. One hour of cooking and one hour of housework means two hours in total, even if both happen during the same visit.
- Choose the hours you need for each service in your basket.
- Check the displayed hourly rate and total before submitting.
- If the job needs more time, agree the change through Hometown before extra work begins.
